Paying Homage

"My dad owned this jacket before me. He was a carpenter and when I decided to follow in his footsteps, he passed it on to me for my 18th birthday.

I always looked up to him, always in awe with what he could make with his bare hands. It took me a bit of time to grow into it, but wearing it every day meant it eventually moulded to me and my every day life.

Wearing this jacket to work every day feels as though I'm paying homage to my dad. I'll always appreciate the day's he took me to work with him when I was younger and seeing him wear the jacket. He's really been an inspiration for all the work I do."

"Perhaps it moulded to my life too much. You can see the tears where I've caught it whilst working in the studio."

Expression of Appreciation

"I help out a lot within the community, more than my community service requires me to. Recently I've been helping out the Shared Studios in my spare time as the sewing space needed new studio tables. I met Sophie there, she helps run the repair workshops. She was so grateful for my help and insisted on expressing her appreciation. She was determined to repair my jacket for me, which I thought was beyond all hope and repair."

BORO & NATURAL DYE

"I love what Sophie has done to my jacket. I thought she was crazy to offer help to fix my jacket. I'm astonished on how well it has turned out. I let her have free rein with it and she managed to create such a pleasing colour through natural dye and has patched up all the worn areas through boro. Not only has she  inspired me to take up one of her repairs workshops but I've made a new friend out of it. This jacket no longer reminds me just of my dad, but the amazing community I'm surrounded by."
